Richard Sexton There's an easy explanation for why this is wrong. Tabs were invented to mitigate the need to type space-space-space-space and to shore each of those ascii space characters, hex 20 decimal 32. Their "survey" was flawed because it didn't show which one was better by any rational argument, it showed they're more popular with people that make more money as programmers. You know who makes more money as programmers? Guys that do sql for insurance companies. You who uses tabs? Fucking NASA. Bell Labs. All Universities. Programming sql for insurance companies is a soul destroying job and they're paid more than any other type of programmer to stick it out. NASA doesn't pay that well but rather than gouging your eyes out with white hot needles after 20 years you'd want to spend several lifetimes there if you could. People there understand how computers work and use tabs because it's the right thing to do. Who cares if a larger number of less experienced programmers haven't leabed thing thing we all learn yet, so what,there are more Toyotas on the road than Ferrari's and this does not mean the Toyotas as better. So,two fallacies here,first that what the masses use is better. Nope. Two, that there's a correlation between spaces/tabs and money, this could be coincidence and it's fun to think about like this but this correlation has no possible correlation other than the silly one I made up here.
