What I saw is, you go to University to learn programming in Canada and every student has to buy thousands of dollars of US software - it's mandatory. I have a vision of these students working on "the" software they use instead which they wrote. Waterloo did this with Compilers, OCAD U should do it with productivity tools. It makes the difference when asked "Do you know Photoshop" if you say "I helped write its replacement" in the world job market.
Such software already exists in Canada and my goal is to bridge the gap between what is, and what could be instead, given the resources.
