Clara Sexton: Dream Cat: Canada
As a mixed-race, 2nd-generation-born Canadian, I have a varied background of family history that influences me. Exploring themes of identity as a person of colour, I use research relating to ancestral religion, ways of life, mythology, folk tales, patterns on clothing and objects; and unique cultural features.
My family is originally from the West Indies in a small country called Guyana. They immigrated to Canada in the 1960s where they quickly assimilated into Western culture. In my work I examine these roots and how things have changed over time.
Embracing my Hindu - Persian heritage, I look into ways ancient artworks were created. With identifying motifs and symbolism, I incorporate this into my work in Arabesque detail.
While attending OCAD University and making interactive art using microcomputers and sensors, I participated in a student exhibit at Leo Gallery; My group displayed "Future City", a floating, LED-powered architectural model that was an idealized futuristic city borne of our own imagination.
I began painting in 2021 and aspire to have my works shown worldwide. I have shown my works in local galleries and cafes, such as Feed It Forward in Toronto. I have painted small outdoors murals for my garden and windows.
