The purpose of this project was to make a machine that draws. This was our first trip to Active Surplus as a class.
My partner and I could see everyone in class was doing something similar to each other and attaching arms with traditional drawing tools to the motor. We wanted to incorporate LEDs, and create a machine whose beauty was in the act of drawing.
Made from an old window and spare wood.
That is copper wire bent to make 4 arms, which magnets are attached to the end. There are magnets on the other side of the glass with a layer of teflon on them so when the motor spins, the magnets spin both on top and underneath the glass.
We chose a medium not commonly used for drawing: glitter, which with the moving light from LEDs created a hypnotic effect.
We used white LEDs to reflect the colours in the glitter. You can participate in this installation by first pouring coloured glitter on the glass, then starting the motor to make a unique coloured pattern.
