Goji
Goji

The goji berry bush prefers soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. A soil test kit from the garden center can determine the current pH of the ground where you'll be establishing the bushes. If your soil is extremely acidic, add ground limestone to raise it to at least 6.6 on the pH scale. If it is overly alkaline, ground sulfur or peat moss can lower the pH level to no higher than 7.5. Read package directions to determine how much to apply, based on the soil's current pH level and the square footage of your goji berry patch. As the shrubs mature and begin drawing more nutrients from the soil, they'll benefit from a light layer of compost each spring. Moisture Although gojis are tough enough to survive in the wild, keeping the soil moist encourages optimum berry production. Give them about an inch of water once a week during periods of low rainfall. sfgate.com
Planting
Make sure the roots of the Lycium barbarum are moistened well before planting by placing them in a bucket with lukewarm water. Prepare a large planting hole of 50 x 50 x 50 cm and loosen the soil. Put the root ball of the Lycium barbarum at the right depth in the planting hole. The top of the root ball should be just below the ground level. Fill the planting hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. The Goji berry grows well in any sandy garden soil that is well-drained and enjoys a spot in full sun or light shade. The planting distance between the bushes is about 1-1.5 metres.

Lyricum barbarum is a very easy fruit bush to grow. Water the goji berries more often during dry periods. Fertilization is not necessary. The berries ripen in late summer. Pick them with gloves on to prevent the discolouring of the fruits. Harvest the Goji berries only when they are fully ripe. Prune the Goji Berry regularly to keep the bush compact. Use gloves to do this because of the thorns. Every spring, cut off 1/3 of the older branches. Training horizontally along wires is also possible. The branches can become 3 m long.

Lyricum barbarum is a special, yet little known fruit bush that certainly deserves a place in your garden or fruit garden. The violet flowers appear from May. They are followed by bright red elongated berries. Goji berries are originally from China. They are important in traditional Chinese medicine. The berries contain many vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. You can make the berries into jam, juice or syrup. The berries can also be dried. Lycium barbaricum also appears in the wild in Europe, especially along the coast. Also beautiful planted as a free growing hedge. -bakker.com

Plant them in containers and bring them inside when the temperatures drop. Goji will grow in sun or partial shade, but your harvest will be greater with more sun.

Control measures. In the US, Maughan and Black, 2015 states that as goji is still a new crop, the pest information is limited and the only pest reported on goji in Utah is A. kuko. Their recommended control measures include sulphur, insecticidal soap or horticultural oil (0.5% solution), only under the limit of 32°C or horticultural oil 2%, either in the fall, just before leaves drop) or in the spring (just as leaves emerge).

Control
Sulfur, insecticidal soap, or horticultural oil (0.5% solution) can be used to control. None of these should be used when temperatures will be above 90 °F within 4 hours of spraying. A spray application of 2% horticultural oil, either in the fall (just before leaves drop) or in the spring (just as leaves emerge) will be most effective. Keep alternative hosts such as pepper, eggplant, and black nightshade, clear from the area. usu.edu

How to Get Rid of Gall Mites The first and most important step in controlling fuchsia gall mites is to prune the damaged growth back to where the plant appears normal, as the damaged growth will not recover. Dispose of the prunings carefully to prevent further spread.

University of California’s Integrated Pest Management program (UC-IPM) suggests that control may be attained by applying a spray miticide at two and three weeks after pruning. UC-IPM also notes that application of horticultural oil spray or insecticidal soap may provide some control, but soaps and oil won’t kill mites tucked into distorted plant tissues that remain after pruning.

However, if you hope to achieve fuchsia gall mite treatment without chemicals, oils and soaps applied every seven to ten days may be worth a try. Spray carefully to achieve complete coverage.

But if you have fuchsia gall mite, this is our best advice:
Cutting off the infested shoot tips will remove many mites but regrowth can become infested and so a weekly follow-up check of your plants is required.
Prune away any new growth that is showing early symptoms. This has proved to be an efficient way of keeping mite damage under control.
Cut back all the fuchsias in the garden to ground level and destroy the prunings - don’t throw them on the compost heap. Either burn or put them in sealed plastic bag plastic in the sun so they dry out and then throw away. Your plants will soon reshoot next season.
Remember to wash your hands and secateurs before handling any other fuchsias. And if you need a little chemical intervention then check out our pesticides - and always, always, always follow the manufacturer's instructions to the letter. That’s always. garden-pests-fuchsia-gall-mite
