KOHLRABI Brassica oleracea (gongylodes group)
PURPLE VIENNA
The hardiest cultivars of Kohlrabi are those with
purple skins and `Purple Vienna` an old variety
seems to be the hardiest of all. Start planting in
early spring for harvest in mid summer to fall.
Like a cross between a potato and a squash, the
crisp white flesh is perfect for dips, grated for

Start your plants indoors about four to six weeks before you plan to put them outside.
You can have a continuous crop if you plant your kohlrabi every two to three weeks. Make sure to place the seeds ¼ to ½ inch deep into the soil about 2 to 5 inches apart if planting seeds directly outside. Also, when growing kohlrabi, keep the soil well watered or you'll end up with tough, woody stemmed plants
After four to six weeks, plant the baby plants outdoors in well drained, rich soil. Growing kohlrabi is most successful in cooler weather. The early crops started indoors and then transplanted outdoors will provide you with a nice crop.
Just as some plants work well together, some plants do not. Aphids and flea beetles are pests that are attracted to kohlrabi as are cabbage worms and loopers. Thus, it wouldn’t be a good idea to group members of the cabbage family together with kohlrabi. It would just give more fodder to these pests.
Pests & Diseases of Kohlrabi
Kohlrabi can be affected by many pest insects, including cabbage worms, harlequin bugs, and flea beetles.
Hand pick cabbage worms and harlequin bugs as they are found. All of these kohlrabi pests can be controlled using organic garden dust.
Pyrethrin spray can be used for large flea beetle infestations.
Kohlrabi can also be affected by clubroot which can sometimes be very common among plants in the cabbage family.
Make sure to use crop rotation to help control pests and disease issues
