‘BEAUTIFUL MILD JAPANESE CHILLI’
C. ANNUUM
Finally we got the Shishito Pepper, one we have been wanting to grow for years. A chilli people rave about, apparently not hot, but it is not all about the heat merely about flavour.
The plants aren’t big, and get to approximate 50 cm in height. This stocky little chilli plant grows well in a pot, and is easy to grow. Furthermore an amazing producer of ribbed and thin walled pods, starting off green and mature to a deep red colour.
They are normally consumed green, fried in oil till the skin blisters, and then sprinkled with salt, also used tempura style.
Great producing Japanese chilli with amazing flavour, and it is mild, so perfect for anyone. If you are space challenge the Shishito is a great choice, and get the kids into growing chillies with this one.
Pods size: 7 cm long and 2 cm wide
Flavour: Really sweet.
Heat level: Mild

On the Scoville scale, shishito peppers fall in the 50-200 range. For comparison, a jalapeno is 2500 to 4500.
Transplant shishito pepper plants into the garden when they are about 8 weeks old.
How many sets of leaves do they have?
-If there are 2 or more, it may be time to transplant them to a larger pot or perhaps their permanent home.
-If there are 2 or more sets of leaves and they are still in seed starting mix, they might need to be fertilized. Try feeding them with diluted organic fish emulsion- the dilution should look like brown water and have a faint odor, not muddy water and knock your socks off odor.

I don’t like Miracle Grow for veggies because it is too high in nitrogen. You just get great big green plants, but no fruit. When it’s time for flowering, you want to use a fertilizer with higher phosphorous and potassium. That means you choose one with an NPK ratio where the second 2 numbers are higher than the first. You can also encourage blooming and fruit set by picking the peppers. The more you pick, the more it makes.
What are the pros? Easy, Fast, Decorative
What are the cons? nothing
Review: I started these indoors in late June (late in the season, I know) and put TWO plants outdoors in August. I think I used 2 gallon pots, but they might have been 3. I staked the stem with a bamboo stake to protect it from wind. These grew quick, though the plant is supposed to be smaller than normal pepper plants. They flowered beautifully and I got about 3 dozen full size green peppers and about 2 dozen more small peppers before first frost in mid-October. I ate all of them before they turned red. Didn't experience any of the legendary spicy peppers in my mix, but I got 1 pepper that had a subtle bite to it. Overall these were super easy, and I will try them again next year when I will have a chance to start earlier in the season.

Small plant large yields
What are the pros? Superb Flavor, Huge Yields
What are the cons? Slow Maturity, Aphids
Review:
These were very tasty peppers. The fruits stayed green and unripe for around 2 months - they're unpleasant to eat raw while green (unsweet, slightly bitter). suffice it to say, the wait was worth it. A bright sweet full peppery taste, excluding the random hot-ish ones. Good germination. Ran into aphids towards the end of the season. The plant itself is about a foot high and wide with a sturdy stem. Will be growing again. START EARLY. 2 week shipping to Canada. rareseeds

Very productive dwarf japanese variety yielding dozens of wrinkled hot peppers. Shishito is a japanese frying pepper with medium heat, also used to flavor tempuras and other meals.
