Physalis ixocarpa, Solanaceae
Variety very fertile and hasty, very sweet. Essential ingredient in making Mexican salsa verde. The paper-covered fruits look like big earth cherries and fall to the ground when they are ready. Some will be green and tart, perfect for salsa, others will have ripened to yellow and will be very sweet and fragrant. Yellow flowers striped with brown are charming, all pointing down, and it would be better to grow plants in large raised pots to enjoy them seen from below. The plant adapts to the wind in a remarkable way, leaning on stems that it folds expressly, like flying buttresses. Traditional Southwestern Indian variety from JL Hudson. $ 3.50
