Solanum lycopersicum 'Indigo Rose'
Duration: Annual
When to Sow: Spring Ease of Germination: Easy
One of the darkest tomatoes known: it gets almost as dark as a plum when direct sunlight can reach the young fruits as they develop. The flavour is rich and deeply satisfying, with -- well -- a hint of plum! The fruits are dark because they accumulate anthocyanins which have potent antioxidant properties. Indeterminate habit; needs support. 100 days.

Indigo Rose
80 days. Purple-black tomato that contains the antioxidant anthocyanin in its flesh. Anthocyanins are also found in blueberries and were crossed into cultivated tomatoes from wild tomatoes using classic plant breeding— no GMO nonsense here. Vigorous plants produce loads of saladette-sized tomatoes in clusters of 6 to 8. We found the fruit really tasty, on the tangy side but with a healthy dose of sweetness. Pick when the green patch at the bottom of the fruit turns red. Delightful. Indeterminate.
Days to Maturity:80

You have to let them really ripen on the vine, until they’re soft to the touch, to get the best taste. Underripe equals less flavor. They get orange on the bottom instead of green, and the purple tops get almost blackish-brown.

Indigo Apple: This was a Wild Boar Farm Tomato seed. The tomatoes were a little larger than cherries. They came in clusters like cherries and were used like cherries in cooking and eating. The plant did well but like many darker tomatoes they took longer to mature and gain flavor.

Indigo Rose has created a wave of enthusiasm among commercial farmers and gardeners to feature this in their gardens because of its stunning ornamental quality. Developed by Jim Myers at Oregon State University. Indigo Rose stepped out as the first really dark purple tomato. According to Jim Meyers, Indigo Rose is the first tomato in the world that has anthocyanins in its fruit, a naturally occurring and powerful anti-oxidant found in blueberries.
Our organic TomatoFest seeds produce vigorous and hardy, compact, indeterminate plants that yield abundant crops of 1-2 oz., round tomatoes with dark purple ("black") skin that occurs on the portion of the fruit exposed to sunlight while the fruit in the shade turns a dark red when mature. When mature the inside flesh turns a dark red and provides loads of well-balanced, complex and full range of almost plummy flavors. Sweet but with a delicious tang. Must wait for these to ripen fully before eating if you eat them before ripe, when insides are green (see above photo on plate) they are to acidic tasting. Reported to be more nutritious. Proven a good market tomato for its stunning appearance and longer shelf life and flavor. Definitely a novelty tomato worth trying. U.S. PVP #201100302 and Canada PBR#14-8188 -
