DRAGON CARROT (85 DAYS)
Besides the appealing purple red color what really stood out to us was the crunch and flavor of this carrot, not over saturated with sweetness and has a wild, earthy side. Colorful inside and out, the interior is bright orange with a yellow core. A danver type, growing to 7 “ and producing consistent shaped roots. 300 seeds $ 1.95
PLANTING:
Germination- 6-14 days
Outdoors- Early spring, a few weeks before last frost until mid summer. Sow lightly, 1/4” deep, with soil temperature 50-80 degrees. The cooler the soil the longer it takes for germination, up to 3 weeks. The soil moisture should be maintained regularly until germination. Thin to 1-3” apart.
Harvest– Start when carrots reach finger size for baby carrots or when they turn to a bright orange. Late season carrots hold longer and become sweeter in the cooler weather.
Tips- Use a row cover helps to maintain moisture for germination. Carrots prefer a loose soil, free of rubble. If your soil is heavy with clay, use the shorter varieties. Keep well weeded and cover any exposed carrot with soil to prevent greening.
A WINNER ALL AROUND
Our first time growing these, my grandson the carrot lover wanted to try them. We only raise a small garden in the upper midwest and actually grew them in a container! Not only did they germinate extremely well but they did great growing in the container. Consistent in size, they are beautiful. I was prepared to be underwhelmed with the flavor but we REALLY like them. Where I think they shine is when eaten raw, the description is spot on, they're very earthy with a wonderful carrot flavor, and of course they look amazing. Will be growing more of these in future ;)
GOOD RED CARROT
This is the second red carrot I've purchased from Pinetree, and it did relatively ok in my sandy soil, zone 3/4. We had a cool summer, and while a lot of this variety germinated, most were very small. I probably could have done a better job thinning them, too. I previously ordered the Atomic Red variety and really liked those, but they are now unavailable.

PURPLE DRAGON CARROT
60-70 days. Be the first on your block to bring psychedelic slaw to block parties. Purple Dragon was named for its deep purple exterior, although the interior is a fiery dark orange with a bright yellow core. It has a most uncommon spicy flavor and is crisply-tender. Try this variety if you have children (or adults) who are finicky about regular Carrots. This fun, strong, open-pollinated variety grows quite quickly - harvest at smaller sizes for the best flavor. Grate into long, thin ribbons for a spectacular Carrot salad. (OP.)

75 days. This Danvers type carrot is a nutritional powerhouse! Tests show Dragon to be high in anthocyanins and other antioxidants. It's the carrot of our ancestors, as hundreds of years ago wild carrots were either white or purple. The eye-catching skin is deep purple, with the interior ranging from yellow-orange to pumpkin-orange. Maintains its spicy flavor whether eaten raw or cooked. Great steamed or juiced.

Purple Dragon stands out amongst a wave of newly introduced purple carrots - for several reasons. It’s gorgeous, fascinatingly deep reddish-purple skin is just the right color, drawing your eye. The strikingly intense orange interior hints at the flavors without giving everything away, because this isn’t just another uniquely colored, moderately sweet carrot. The rich spicy-sweet, addictively complex flavors are good when fresh but amazing when cooked, releasing more of the spice notes – not in a pepper spiciness way, but an old-world bazaar spice way.
As if all of this wasn’t enough, they grow well and taste delicious in almost any soil – from sand to clay. They taste better after the first frosts but beat almost all other carrots by a country mile in the middle of summer. They can reach 7 – 8”, but their half-long root habit means they grow well-formed roots even in heavy soil.
Many who usually don’t like carrots love the Dragon for their lovely spiciness that balances the natural carrot sweetness.
Harvest Tip
Give carrots a good twist when you pull them up so that the leaves do not break off in your hand, but once they are up, cut off the leaves right away. Carrot tops may look pretty, but they keep growing and draw moisture and nourishment out of the roots, leaving them limp, wrinkled and tasteless.

The first carrot I planted when I got a garden of my own, which admittedly needed some work. The only spot with nice soil was shady all afternoon, but I crossed my fingers and planted Dragon anyhow. Germination was excellent, and I had a good harvest of healthy red carrots that held up well in cold storage all winter, and always looked great on the plate. I'm withholding a star only because they didn't achieve full length, just half length, but that was probably my fault because of the location, and not anything to do with the carrots themselves.

Heirloom Carrot Seeds - Purple Dragon Carrot
A wonderful purple skinned carrot with a yellow orange interior. A more recent selection, but a very good carrot nevertheless. Purple and yellow carrots are believed to have originated in Afghanistan; while the white carrot is native to Europe. The older varieties of purple carrots, such as the Violette de Syrie, turn a brown color when cooked. The Purple Dragon does not turn this color because only its skin is purple. I nice tasting carrot that is mildly sweet and slightly spicy. Great for salads. Your kids will love it!

Purple Dragon Carrot
70 days. Gorgeous reddish-purple exterior is smooth and very attractive — unusually refined appearance. The purple outside makes a nice contrast with the brilliant orange interior, especially when served as slices on relish trays, platters and more. Roots typically reach 7-8” in length; halflong root habit means you can get well-formed roots even in somewhat tight or heavy soil. Flavor is spicy-sweet and wonderfully complex--great for snacking, and kids really seem to love them! The anthocyanin-rich purple coloration is a valuable bonus, and the roots contain lots of lycopene as well. Bred by Dr. John Navazio.
