Capsicum chinense
Bagged Bloom Seeds
“Cabaça Roxa” is Portuguese for “Purple Gourd,” and indeed, these do look like cute, wee-tiny purple gourds. A Capsicum chinense from Brazil, it is also known as noble purple or purple small gourd. The fruits and flowers are beautiful. This pepper is very tasty and aromatic but quite hot. As I sliced the little things, that aroma which says to me, “We are almost superhots” came wafting up.
Production is abundant on a tall plant (nearly 5 ft tall in my garden), but I have few seeds whose blooms were isolated. I will have more next year. Meanwhile, just one plant will provide abundant lovely fruits that range from mulberry pinkish-purple to cherry red. The plants themselves are gorgeous, with leaf veins and stems a dark purple that stand out against the green leaves.
