Saffron
Saffron

Crocus sativus
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 6-8)
When to Sow: Late Summer/Early Fall
The golden spice of great antiquity. Legend has it that Venus fed it to her husband, Vulcan, to put him to sleep when her lover, Mars, came to visit. In Roman times, it scented the daily baths of the emperors and was strewn lavishly in the streets whenever they passed through. At about $4500 a kilo, saffron is the world’s costliest spice; it takes the stigmas of about 150,000 flowers to make one kilo. As costly as it is, it is nevertheless quite easy to grow in the garden; but north of zone 6 it needs to be wintered indoors in a cool place. About six plants are needed to produce enough spice for one recipe. It’s lovely lavender blossoms in fall are an added bonus.
Due to plant import restrictions, this item can only be shipped within Canada and the U.S.

How to successfully grow Saffron also known as Kesar, Zaffran in pots at home (Urdu/Hindi). I have grown few zaffran plants in pots on my roof and I got beautiful flowers on them. Saffron stigmas are used as a spice. Its bulb is commonly known as the "saffron crocus". The red stigmas called threads are collected and dried to be used as a spice.

0:00Hello, every one friend I hope all of you will be fine and happy.
0:05I have received requests for making this video from many viewers so this is a special video.
0:10In this video, I will tell you how to grow saffron at home.
0:15Especially I will tell you how to grow it in pots.
0:25So let's start.
0:27These are some of my saffron plants that I have grown in pots.
0:34Saffron is grown from a bulb.
0:41If you want to grow it in your home then the first thing that you must...
0:55keep in mind is a season.
1:02It grows in cold days and you can only plant it bulbs when the weather is not too hot.
1:09Here we plant it in October you can plant according to your weather.
1:15If the weather is too warm then bulbs may rot in the soil.
1:25I won't take long and bulbs will grow flowers in a month or 45 days after planting.
1:46Bulb size is also important bigger the bulb more...
1:52chances that flowers will come on it in the first season.
1:59If you plant small size bulbs then flowers may not come in...
2:05the first season and they only grow foliage.
2:09Bigger size bulbs will have flowers in almost 40 days after planting.
2:19Smaller bulbs will grow big but they won't bear flowers, they will be ready for next season.
2:27Bumble bees are coming their flowers are very attractive for insects.
2:36Saffron crocus bulbs multiple in the ground and baby bulbs are produced around mother bulb.
2:46These flowers will be picked then foliage grows big and after...
2:54a few months it will also die and bulbs in the ground will multiply in numbers.
2:59Planting the bulbs is simple just bury them 3 inches deep in the soil.
3:12As baby bulbs have to produce so you need to bury them...
3:223 inches deep so that baby bulbs have space to grow.
3:34I have used different size pots for saffron let me show you my pots.
3:40This is 6 inch pot.
3:45These 4 are 8-inch pots.
3:54In my opinion, if you are growing it in pots then 8-inch pot is the best size for them.
4:04As in 8-inch pot, they will have enough space for good size baby bulbs production.
4:11When the season is over I will take out these bulbs and will see how...
4:20baby bulbs are grown in different size pots.
4:26I have also grown them in 10-inch pot to see the results.
4:31The soil I have used for them in 2 part mud, 1 part sand and 1 part compost.
4:41They need well-drained soil so make sure pots have proper drainage holes.
4:51Clay pots are best for them as water can drain from walls also.
5:02If the soil is too moist then bulbs may rot so it is important that draining is good.
5:12Give them water when the soil gets dry and give water again when the soil is getting dry.
5:21Its like they don't need too much water you just have to keep then little moist.
5:35Their bulbs grow like this foliage comes and it has flower in between it.
5:45Flowers bloom quickly this flower will fully bloomed tomorrow hopefully.
5:57These red stigmas are for what saffron is grown.
6:05They are collected from flowers and spice is made from them.
6:12Flowers die quickly so harvest them when they bloom, this is a one-day old flower.
6:23typically One bulb many produce 4,5 flowers and big bulbs can produce 6 or 7.
6:33Bigger the bulb more the flowers.
6:45Morning time is the best time to harvest flowers.
6:57At that time they are closed and stigmas in a fresh state.
7:09So full flower is picked for the stigmas.
7:14I only have few here people that grow them on a big scale...
7:25collet flowers and then take stigmas from them.
7:36As they are so small and light weight so that's why saffron spice is so expansive.
7:45Its bulbs are also expansive and it takes a lot of flowers to just make few grams.
7:53Thanks for watching I hope you liked my video take care bye for now.
