Prepare seedling area.
Plant peppers by end of month.
|
Start tomatillo and ground cherry.
|
Start tomato sprouts for early March. They need 8 weeks before transplant.
CL method: plant 40 seeds per cell, cover with plastic wrap, transplant in mid march.
begin with 15 plants transplanted, which will make 25 varieties = 375. or 10 of each variety to make 250 plants separated.
A cream container can hold 8-10 plants, so will need 25-31 cream containers. Too many. If we make 5 of each variety, we will need roughly 12-15 containers for 125 plants.
Late March: a cold frame on hanging baskets to start growing lettuce. Add ventilation: cold frame

Propagate canes - raspberry, gooseberry, red currant
Plant carrots
Urban Harvest - April 1st, we might get: Chocolate Beauty(sweet), Shishito (sweet), Jimmy Nardello(sweet).
Might need to buy Anaheim from Uharvest.
Maybe: Espelette (hot), Lemon Drop (Baccatum - Hot)
Consider buying cucumber seed.
Thinking of ways to add a cloche to the hanging baskets when planting lettuce early. Plastic bags?
Also need mesh for tom thumb, raspberry.
Last April we had no sun at 7:35 am, full sun at 9 am, and partial sun at 1 pm. This means we have 4 hours of full sun for most of the garden.
Plant a few Honeynut squash on April 1st for people, maybe keep outside under plastic on the porch.
Protect Young Tomato Plants from Wind and Chill
Temperatures in the 50s and cooler dramatically slow plant growth, and wind dries out plants and can cause fragile stems to break. Plant your tomatoes on the south side of the house to take advantage of the warmer microclimate. Or, use our Pop-Up Tomato Accelerator to create a protected microclimate anywhere.
Wait to Apply Mulch
Leave the soil bare around new transplants for the first month or so, to allow the sun to continue to warm the soil. Once summer weather arrives in earnest, you can apply a 2" layer of straw to help conserve soil moisture.

End of May: last frost: planting time.
Planting: At least 4 tomatillo plants, 2-4 husk cherries, plant them 2 together.
Many poblanos, many Jalapenos, many serranos. Some Anaheim, some orange/purple bell, some chocolate shepherd peppers. 1 or 2 habaneros and yellow cayenne. Sweet habanero, lunchbox, decorative hots.
One or two toms. Planning to put Tom Thumb in a hanging basket on the fence by the tree - maximum light.
Hanging baskets (6): 1 tom thumb(?), strawberry, lettuce/escarole, bromeliad(?) Maybe 2 strawberry with lettuce/escarole/mesclun in each once.
Buy basils at nations, early May -done may 14
Include a low-nitrogen, slow-release fertilizer at planting to reduce your workload. These release small amounts of nutrients over a long period of time, eliminating the need to mix and fertilize weekly. Make a second application midseason if needed.
Transplant and cover peps and toms. Give compost/manure to all perennial crops.
May 15: we have decided to pretty much skip the carrots(at least til fall) and plant yellow pear tomatoes along with Tom Thumb. Going to fix our hose to our faucet.
Add sulphur to poblanos for more bigger fruitlink

Cover. protect your harvest with simple bird netting. Netting comes in various pre-cut sizes, as well as large rolls. Lay it directly over red and black currants, trellised raspberries and other fruit plants. Make sure to secure it against the trunks of the plants to stop birds from sneaking under the net.
Cool-season crops taste bitter when harvested in temperatures higher than 80 degrees. (lettuce)

decided to leave raspberries where they are for next year.
|
Move berry plants in side bed: we have golden raspberry, red raspberry, black currant, gooseberry. Take raspberry cuttings, etc.
Late september: bring in all metal tools.
Label all perennials in pots: strawberry plants, kiwiberry, borage, parsely. Use painter's tape.
Save seed from tomatillos! and all peppers!
|
Move plants inside: poblano, shishito, jalapeno, habanero. Keep under bright light in bathroom, or on top of the desk.
