Noticed some small white mites on the pepper containers. Will try to get some garlic spray going. No sign of sprouting in tomatoes yet.
Potted last habanero. Two habs are already showing leaves.
Potted 4 small oxalis (4") and 2 big (6"). Going to make room and pot more now.
Thinking of planting carrot outdoors now, and mesclun on top of the desk now.
We now have 8 small oxalis, 4 big ones

Thinking of adding bamboo sticks to extend the front fence, at the poles. As long as it doesn't create shade. Want to hang tomatoes and strawberry plants there as it gets the most sun, but also keep people from easily grabbing fruit. Can add string and vines to make the poles attractive.

It appears in the early morning last March that the tree does cast shadows toward the house, but that may only be early morning.

Would like to begin a garden entrance trellis, don't know how to source materials cheaply, except we may use 2 long poles at either end and train vines to grow up them, and worry about the top later.

container depth, cloches

Tomato sprouts are coming up! Striped German and one other has the most. Others have one or two barely visible. No leaves yet. Now there are leaves showing (it's night time). Will put them all under the strong lights tomorrow morning. Here are the minimum soil depths for healthy growth. Keep in mind that you can get by with less depth if you use a self-watering planter. 4-5": chives, lettuce, radishes, other salad greens, basil, coriander 6-7": bush beans, garlic, kohlrabi, onions, Asian greens, peas, mint, thyme 8-9": pole beans, carrots, chard, cucumber, eggplant, fennel, leeks, peppers, spinach, parsley, rosemary 10-12": beets, broccoli, okra, potatoes, sweet corn, summer squash, dill, lemongrass gardeners Cloches: Individual plants can also be covered with plastic milk jugs, coffee cans with both ends cut out, or tomato cages encircled with clear plastic. Just be sure that the cover is vented, and that you stay on the lookout for signs of overheating.gardeners

drip irrigation plan

Moved tomatoes under the strong lights, covered loosely with plastic. Moved all but 3 containers of pepper plants to the bathroom. They are having mold, and hopefully the air and warmth there will kill the mold. Looks black and white. Need to set up lights in bathroom within a day or two.
Trying to set up a container for lettuce/mesclun. Lots of room under the strong lights now. We have 95 pepper plants in the bathroom, and about 30 under the lights.

"If it isn't too big, one thing you could do is rig some soaker hoses onto a five gallon bucket, and run the hoses through the garden. Then, place the bucket on higher ground above the highest point on the hoses, and fill the bucket using gallon jugs." "Spigot on the bottom of them to hook a hose to them." How to Garden without a water hose?

Dollarama kit $3 with 45' vinyl pipe.

Also saving bottles now for seedling pots, and for buried drip bottles, and cloches. Glass bottles as water globes -save lids to poke holes in them.

Found the ideal set-up for our irrigation system: Experimental Container Gardening : A Soaker Hose Gravity Drip System . We can use our old sink, on top of the bricks, dump water in it and connect the irrigation hose to the bottom hole.

Planted escarole and mesclun mix last night. The tomatoes are all sprouted, many have a lot of sprouts and the leaves are twice as big as yesterday.

We plan to use 2 or 3 irrigation systems, and to use buried bottles for the ones not on the system.

Plant tomatillos asap.

Today: start tomatillo x6, and transplant 2 chinese and 2 poblano peppers. Maybe start a new ground cherry. Plant oxalis bulbs.

Ground cherry is just starting to show one sprout now. Planted 6 tomatillos, and transplanted 2 poblano and 2 chinese 5 colour. Still black mold on some of the pepper pots. Spraying with alcohol and windex now. Lettuce is also sprouting.

9

Coleus roots are very long now, ready to go.

10

hooks for containers

Thinking of getting plastic trays from Rona. They are $5. at Canadian Tire they are $7. They have 72 cells.
Third leaf on tomatoes is coming out now.

12

Didn't water my pepper plants for too long and now a bunch of them shriveled up. Not happy.

14

Several oxalis pots have sprouted the first leaf, not open yet.
Counted 33 large pots including black pots, all empty.
Column can fit 3 blue pots across. Paving edge stone is equal o two and a half of my shoe length. Aug 7 shows very bushy, leafy currant type plant by tree in ribbed back pot.

15

path is 3 edg stones long before the curve. my shoe is approx 10". So stone is 24"-25" long. So we have 6 feet of stone, plus maybe a foot at the gate. The curve is 1 stone long at least.May 20 has a good pic of the step by the fence, and a pic beside the porch. it's 2 stone wide plus a curved stone. So 4 feet plus a bit.

May 26 squash seedlings are outside. tree appears to take up the first 4 feet on right side.

Moved all the peppers today to new plastic pots, and planted 1 yellow jalapeno, 1 bolivian rainbow for us. Used 9 out of 10 plastic trays, so 9x12=118 - 3 unused = 115 pepper plants. 3 or 4 are on the edge and may die.

Counted 33 medium to large pots outside, empty.

16

29 pots plotted for veg plants. 2 round pots plotted for flowers. Room for 6 1' corner pots. Will need 8 long square pots, have room for 9, or more if we attach to side fence. I count 6 in Jul 10 pic, plus the large poblano one.

We got red carrots from Organic Orange last week and at least 3 tops are just starting to grow green leaves.

Deck is 8 steps long. Took out pot for carrots - sterilize today. Tomatoes watered today - some of them are growing like crazy with real leaves growing. Tomatillo is sprouted, 3 today. Ground cherry is growing well.

In 2 days, when soil is dry, will transplant 5 tomato varieties. Cell pack trays(12s) are 3 for $1.25. Will need 6 trays to do 3 of each tomato.

find a nursery, cameroon

landscapeontario
Thinking of sending seeds to Cameroon. "Months with the highest average low temperature are February, March and April (20.3°C). The coldest month (with the lowest average low temperature) is October (19.2°C)."

20

shoe is 11 inches. porch wod is 1 shoe length to 2 planks, 11.5 planks. watered peppers, 2 have died from no water.
11 is 5.5 x 11 = 55.5 + 5.5 = 61"

Watered tomatoes and some peppers, rotated 1 pepper tray. Tomorrow planning to hang light for peppers, and will replace the 10 dead ones with new grown from cuttings when the plants are stronger.

Also planning to transplant 9 of the mass planted tomato plants, 6 in a half cream container, 3 in vitamin jars, 1 in a shampoo bottle. So, 10. Black mold is stating. Anyway, I have 5 rows of spaces ready fo single plants. Also found 2 small plastic things perfect for transplanting. Will get eady the bottles and name tag stake tonight.

Planted carrots in one pot, 8pm, with 2 bags tied around it.

26

First baby greens

Considering growing Moschata zucchini. Ate our first greens today from our own crop of baby spring greens.

27

Shishito seeds, tomato transplant

Transplanted about 7 tomato types, green zebra, green zebra cherry, green sausage, pink tiger, lucid gem, indigo rose. all to plastic container for the main clump, and 3 or 4 individual pots for each.

2 very small sprouts are up in the carrot pot, they don't look like carrot sprouts.

Received Shishito pepper seeds today! there are about 10-15 seeds.

28

To-do list

Veggie Garden Tidbits, Volume I
To do: clean tools, oil with old coconut oil, sharpen tools.
https://www.finegardening.com/article/clean-sharp-tools-work-better
Todo: sprout shishito, hang light x3, plant more lettuce greens
https://www.finegardening.com/article/making-leaf-mold
also want to add rhubarb plant in the back where it's shady, maybe where the compost pile is.
Chinese 5-colour in bathroom has a flower bud! it's very small, 1 or 2 mm.

29

Put Shishito to sprout last night, 6 seeds. Have 10 left. habanero plant has many flowers on it, at least 10. one is turning white.

essay, cover crops

cover crops Lucid gem fell. Plants are in pieces. There's 5 in the pot, 5 trying to root, and the 4 already planted individually.

Other March Tasks: Reminder to save plastic bottles! SAVE ALL VITAMIN, SHAMPOO, BLEACH, VINEGAR BOTTLES.

Cloche the raspberry plant, maybe also the gooseberry and currants

Plan A: Do 5-10 each variety of tomato in individual pots for the early bird customers. Mass planting for the rest. 5-7 each tomatillo and ground cherry beginning of March.
Plan B: plant 40 seeds per cell, cover with plastic wrap, transplant in mid march. If we make 5 of each variety, we will need roughly 12-15 containers for 125 plants.

Seedlings in bathroom: bottom shelf x2 (10 spaces each), build wall shelves (10 spaces). Downstairs: 6-8 container spaces. Kitchen: by window (last resort, 5-10 spaces) = 360 plants minimum space.

We have no ixia, no acidanthra bulbs. We do have freesia, tigridia and callas.
