This is the “Winter Grape” tomato of old Italy, where farmers would hang the fruit-covered vines and they would stay fresh well into the winter. They also dry perfectly and resemble little “Roma” tomatoes. The flavorful fruit is delicious and great for snacking, fresh or dried.

Solanum lycopersicum. Red Paste. 60-70 days. Semi-det.
Not for fresh eating. Small bushes ripen early with 1-2 oz, plum-sized fruit that keep very well once picked. Unimpressive when eaten fresh, the flavor transforms into deliciousness once dried. It’s also good roasted. A selection of a type of tomato with strains grown in many regions of Italy for winter storage. Fruit is tied in ristras, hung in a cool place and stored for months. We saw this done in Italy and have successfully done it ourselves, making for the perfect homemade pizza topping all winter long. Grappoli d’Inverno means ‘bunches of winter’ in Italian.

“Grappoli d’Inverno” (Pomodori a Grappoli d’Inverno) is an old Italian heirloom. It is reportedly also called Pomodoro Galatina from the originating town in Southern Puglia. Slightly elongated red cherries with a strong flavor and long shelf life are your reward for easy growing of the compact, bushy plants. The translation is “bunches of winter tomatoes,” and they are traditionally hung to dry. I have seen it listed as both determinate and indeterminate, but my plants seemed to have a determinate growth habit. I have read different reports on flavor, but I found them to be both sweet and acidic. If I needed proof, I would have seen it in their attraction for stink bugs. Those insects preferentially cluster on tomato fruits that are both strongly acid and strongly sweet. Condense those flavors by drying, and you have one very useful tomato in the kitchen. This is not a rare variety, but it is highly recommended.
