“Hundreds and Thousands” is a hanging basket variety that bears literally hundreds and thousands of currant-sized sweet red snackers. It is impossible for me to pass the plant without eating some of the ripe fruits.
The history is rather convoluted. First, there was confusion about this being a hybrid versus an open pollinated versus heirloom variety. The (original?) vendor has the seeds listed as an heirloom, but also sells the plants, under the same name, as a hybrid “micro.” Hundreds and Thousands is definitely not a micro-dwarf. The story I've found tells that this vendor found an heirloom tomato known as “Cheriette of Fire” in the Gartensleben genebank, then renamed it, possibly to promote sales.
At any rate, it is a great variety for the hanging basket or pot upon a TALL stand. Hundreds and Thousands does not do well with hot and humid conditions. The first time I grew it, the total number of fruits set was around four. This spring I started the seeds much earlier, then grew the plant in partial shade with a water pan under it. Fruit production under these conditions was
impressive.
