Ahsoak's story

Ahsoak's story

A northern indigenous diet is centered on marine mammal protein and plants. What if he focused on the freezer and avoided eating out or eating processed foods?

Ahsoak settled on whale meat, or muktuk, as the main protein in his diet. He had plenty from a successful spring hunt in Barrow. Whale is high in vitamins D and C, low carbohydrate and nutrient dense. Hunters eat it before going out because it is said to give them energy and keep them warmer. Ahsoak used to eat it in law school before taking long exams because, he said, it kept him from getting hungry. “It takes your body so long to digest it, it’s kind of like the opposite of some kind of empty carb or empty sugar,” he said. “You don’t eat a lot, that’s the biggest thing, it’s very filling.”

Transcription Diet and the human mind presented by Dr Robert Lustig: The Hacking of the American Mind

What we take away from this talk:

  • In the late 1900's we took fat out of our food, and this made it taste terrible. So the industry added sugar to make the food taste good again.
This was all because of a bribe of $60,000 paid to people at Harvard doing a study on sugar. The bribe was from industry and the results of the study said fat was bad, animal fat is unhealthy. It all stemmed from this one lie.
Dr Lustig gives the evidence that animal fat is not harmful to health.

  • On government, organization, and nutrition websites you will see incorrect and outdated information, specifically about cholesterol and eating fats.

After many years of research, we now know that animal fats are healthy. All animal fats are healthy to eat and do not contribute to harmful cholesterol.

Harmful cholesterol (VLDL) is only made from sugar. Too much sugar in the diet increases VLDL levels.

Other cholesterols such as HDL are healthy to have.

Eating fats do not make a person fat. Eating sugar and simple carbs makes people fat.

To be healthy, a diet high in fat, especially marine oils (Omega-3) should be eaten.

    Debugging the Food Guide

This website is contradictory and the facts are not as clear as they should be.
This Food Guide is hideously out-of-date and must be updated immediately. It's no wonder people are getting sick - parts of this flyer are just plain old bad advice. Someone please tell me what traditional country wheat exists?

According to Bhullar's findings in the 2017 report, the Nutrition North program appears to be failing Inuit in terms of prevention malnutrition. Drastic action is needed now. Similar to a food drive, a health drive is proposed in response to Bhullar's information and the Inuit health crisis.

Country food also has nutritional benefits. Vitamins A and D are plentiful in fish oils, and vitamin C is found in various meats, crowberries and raw kelp.

Fish and meat also contain B vitamins and iron. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish, have anticlotting effects and help to lower triglycerides (body fats). Fish heads provide a good source of calcium.

Wild animals such as caribou have extremely high-quality protein in the meat.
