According to Bhullar 2017, certain supplements are needed to restore Inuit back to health.
" Currently, the Nunavut’s Inuit population suffers from the severe deficiency of vitamins, minerals and dietary antioxidants including vitamins A, folic acid, C, D, E, riboflavin magnesium, fibre n-6 fatty acids, and calcium [6,7]."

"A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of micronutrients (vitamins A, B-complex, C, E, and selenium) in TB-HIV co-infected Tanzanian patients showed that these micronutrients decreased the risk of TB recurrence by 45% overall" [1] (Bhullar 2017)

Conclusion: The lack of nutrition among Inuit leads to primary and recurrent TB infections. This commentary recognizes malnutrition and compromised nutritional status as a cardinal feature of TB epidemiology and strongly advocates the initiation of a program targeting this risk of TB.

In Canada, some of these supplements are available free-of-charge for residents. Usually an insurance card is needed (such as NIHB) and a doctor, who will send in the paperwork, and supplements are picked up at the pharmacy. A simple process.

What if more Inuit were able to take advantage of this system?

What to donate?

Donating the resources named above are an option - they are commonly found on the shelf in pharmacies and grocery stores. Doing this can help people who are still recovering from malnutrition and find it hard to make it to doctor's appointments until they get back on their feet and become healthy enough.

It can take several appointments to get all the nutrients prescribed as listed above. As well, there can be waiting periods because of paper work.

These are all barriers to getting nutrients to Inuit, and direct donations of these nutrients can sustain people until they defeat these barriers.

Here, nutritionally dense food options and their impact are also discussed.

The problem: shipping can take a long time and is expensive. food must be non-perishable, which usually means processed food with less nutrition than fresh food.

The solution: Include high-nutrition foods with little added ingredients. non-perishables that are healthy include:
-canned pumpkin
-boxes/cans of coconut cream
-canned oily fish: salmon, mackerel, sardines
-nori sea weed
-almond butter
-ghee

Canned pumpkin is one of the few foods that doesn't lose nutrition during the canning process. It has more vitamin A than almost any other vegetable, often 8,000 - 10,000 IU. to get more than that, you would have to eat a Polar Bear liver, or a seal's eye, which contain 40,000 IU and 10,000 IU respectively. (see healthy food list)

coconut cream is a natural and healthy sweetener. often used to make ketogenic desserts. high in healthy fats, and increases thermogenesis, the optimal rate at which the human body burns calories.
The other thing that promotes healthy weightloss is chilis, which is optimal when eaten with coconut oil. nori is a vegetable. and goes well with muktuk and soy sauce.

the considerations for trans shipment of food to the arctic are simply: W = weight of the shipment C = cost per mile, N = number of miles and we propose that nutrition density (ND) be included in this formula. on a scale of nutritionally dense , or 1, (superfoods ) - to 10 (junk food), not nutritionally dense. so instead of the shipment cost being C x M instead it would be C x M x ND. we defein superfood as any food that contains in a normal serving size, a nutrient equal to the RDA amount or greater. brazil nuts, blueberries, liver.
