Harvest tips

  • If you dont have enough cucs to make pickles, soak them in water before refridgerating, they will stay plump and firm. 20 minutes soak.

Watered today. We are in the middle of a heatwave. Planted lettuce indoorstoday,4varieties.

    05

Planted 4 ghost seeds, 4 choc hab, 4 mushroom. got one of each left, 2 mushroom left. will plant them today. watered grde today, and staked. killed more bugs on the tomatillo. nothing on ground cherry.

    07

We were going to water today, then it rained in the mother of all storms. No watering needed today.

Yesterday we saw the cucumber has flowers! it appears to be a bush type cuc. Also the tomato plant, indigo rose has flowers about to open.
Got the last of the pepper seeds planted indoors the other day, and some lettuce is already coming up.

Today: lost one ground cherry. we now have 3 in side column, 2 in side bed at front. Planted: tom thumb, grape tigerella x2 all in their own pots. planted all the thai basil left with them.
    Planted: morning glory, sweet potato.
Tied string around many plants and stakes.
Put blue fertilizer on only non-flowering plants: most tomatoes and new peppers. fertilize the bulbs too.

    To do: Plant oregano!

    09

Fertilized the bulbs and tomatillos today.

    10

First jalapeno fruit is almost 1 inch long now.

    11

hot and dry yesterday, rained all night last night and all day today. Got blooming fertilizer yesterday.

    12

    13

2 poblano plants looked wilted yesterday. today they are less wilted i think. thinking it could be from too much rain. today the cucumber looked wilted, more likely from lack of water. it was fine yesterday, and it hasn't been too hot (30s) for a few days.
Put 1 tbsp of new blooming fertilier in gallon water. gave half to the cuc thats wilty, and the res to the 2 toms.

    14

fertilized with blooming fert and nitro fert today, everything except tomatillos. soon take cutting and fertilize.

    Plant tom thumb seed now!

planted tom thumb seeds in 2 pots, and took a tomatillo cutting from the square pot. Fertilized basil lightly, fert tomatillos, and callas with appropriate ferts.

    16

    17

rained quite a but yesterday. today it is a heat wave for a few days, and some plants are wilting. will check in evening if thy actually need water.

    18

    19

it rained today. things were getting wilted yesterday. now they look good. picked our first jalapeno on the 17th. picked a few habaneros.

    20

Baby cucumbers are here! female flowers have appeared and yet to bloom! Yesterday we saw our first yellow pear tomato! picking a bowlful of basil every other day. Picked 2 shishitos! Picked 1 more jalapeno! Picked 'chinese 5 colour' and will test it today. looks like a shishito.
3 baby poblano peppers are growing. Need more bamboo stakes! Tomatillo flowers are open!

    21

fertilized callas with blooming fertilizer yesterday. Today it's been raining hard. Was just about to water too.

    23

Garden is going berserk, growing like mad! Our baby cuc flower is open! (first one). it's almost an inch long. the cuc plant is massive! top of the bamboo stakes now. other cuc plant is catching up and climbing all on its own. did some tying up of the 2 tomatoes, yellow pear is branching out like crazy. already moved the two toms away from each other a few days ago. there is barely any room to move around now int he garden. the basil is everywhere! ad to move it form the gutters, which sucks b/c less space. Callas not making many flowers this year.

Picked a handful of jalapenos! picked 3 habanero. there are a hundred flowers on the hab! picked about 3 small poblanos from the furthest plant! planted 1 poblano cutting that rooted with the tom thumbs. the tom thumbs are sprouted and have cotyledons out! tomatillo has 1 flower open now.

    to-do fert raspberry

    24

    25

staked yellow pear and indigo rose. Both have at 4 tomato clusters growing and many more flowers. Picked 4 shishito today, and some b rainbow, which we tasted the other dayand is mildly hot. We ate the shishito and it was delicious.
Yesterday fertilize with blooming fertilizer for callas. Not a single flower right now. Today fertilize the raspberry with high nitrogen. Next week or so will use blooming on it.
Monday should rain, which we will then fertilize everything with blooming fertilizer.

    26

Watered the cuc yesterday and watered everything today. it was up to 34C. tomorrow should rain. we think the callas didn't bloom much this year because it didn't get as much water (we refrained) and it rained a lot last spring.
Hence the bugs this year as they like hot dry spring.
Picking bowlfuls of basil nearly every day now. Harvested our first cucumber today! it was great. about 5 inches. the skin was bitter, but the flesh was sweet. will slice some skin off next time.

    27

    29

Today we watered everything and fertilized everything, nitrogen for basil and banana and raspberry, phosphorus for the peps, toms, cucs. Was supposed to rain yesterday and today, it only rained a little this morning, no rain for a few days. picked a few jalapenos, theres about 5 poblanos on one plant, and the indigo rose has 6-7 clusters of 6 tomatoes, getting to the size of an inch wide. the yellow pear also doing good. moved te ground cherries to the raspberry bed. the cuc by the pillar has grown so much and the leaves are twice the size of the other cuc, possibly because of the larger, wider pot. it was slower to grow but now it's catchingup. it's climbing the pillar and is beautiful.
    Morning glory is doing good.
Picked 1 shishito. not easy to access them right now.
We have too many empty pots.
Will fertilize again in a week or two.
No calla flowers. some leaves are a bit yellow. gave them blooming fertilizer.

We have 10 long basil pots, plus 2 round, and thai in 3 tom pots. Next year: more lettuce leaf, less sweet. around
6 long pots of basil no more!
    give cuc more space
    rotate plants next year
in fall, put dirt in the green sink and black tub for winter storage.
    plant multiflora tomatoes!
